Vet’s golf as we know it today commenced in the 1980’s and is administered by the Australian Veteran Golf Association through State and District bodies. There are over eight thousand Queensland Members in the 23 districts, which includes Wide Bay. Our area contains 17 clubs with Bargara having in excess of 270 members. Veteran golf provides a unique opportunity for men and women to enjoy each others company at a reasonable cost and on a regular basis. Bargara Vets play most Tuesdays during the calendar year and conduct a full fixture list of ‘open’ and ‘club’ events during the season. Additionally, Bargara has hosted a number of State and Regional Championship events in recent times. We welcome visitors at all times of the year.
2018 Life Member’s Day
A Beautiful English summer’s day greeted Vets for the annual Life Member’s day. Very cold and very windy ! It did not deter our golfers who came out in their winter woollies to support our Vet’s Life Members Dell Barratt and Bill Gelhaar. Winners in the Ladies were Fran Taylor(35 Pts), Kristine Davern(40 Pts) and Margaret King(39 Pts) in their respective Divisions. Cleaning up in the Men’s divisions were Des Ryan(42 Pts), Mark Smith(38 Pts), Wally Waugh(37 Pts) and Allan Mansfield(40 Pts). I was fortunate ehough to play with the delightful Marion May who put on a putting masterclass; well done Marion. Looking at the photos here, were Des and Bill brothers in a previous life?.
Well, just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse, our new computer system threw an even bigger hissy fit and even the fag packets didn’t work this time. Stirling work by Captain Johnson has allowed us to bring you some of the results on the day, but now we have a partial list of the top Nett and Gross scores. In the Men’s event Peter Drummond rolled back the years to win, with partner Chris Wake, at the ripe old age of 87. Peter and Chris carded another 76 gross to give a final total of 152. To win a Club Championship at the age of 87 is a great achievement, well done Peter. They pipped runners up Vets Captain Ian Johnson and Ex-President John Archibald by a single shot. According to Jacko, Archie felt sorry “for the old boy” and missed a putt on purpose. I doubt that very much Jacko. In the Ladies event Julie Burton and Rae Le Bherz (159) safely held onto their first round lead to win by a comfortable 5 shots from 2nd placed Leone Burton and Kerry Gallagher. In the Ladies Nett event, fashion conscious Sallie Wake and Allison Jackson (124 Nett) made full use of their handicaps to come from behind to claim the Nett overall prize, along with that of Catwalk Queens, winning from 3 other pairs by 5 shots. The Men’s Nett event was won by Dennis Somers and Malcolm Turner (120 Nett) passing last week’s winners Rory Jackson and Brett Morris (Nett 123) by three shots. If you want to attend the Presentation after our next multi-round event being run by our new computer system don’t forget your sleeping bags!!! A list of the leaders in each category is available here. A detailed list of Winners, rundowns and pin / approach shots is available on our Golf Results page.

Not a wedding photo this time but a fantastic 12th hole greenside bunker shot from one of our Lady Vets during the Ladies Open and Closed Championships. The ball finished inside a metre from the flag for a tap in putt. Which veteran golfer is capable of such a great shot ?
